Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine – About
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and Penn State Health. Our Department has a proud tradition of growth, education, research and outstanding clinical care provision.
Founded in 1970 with Dr Alan Yeakel as Chair, I took over the Department in 2002. Initially known as the Department of Anesthesiology, we extended the name to include Perioperative Medicine in 2016 to realize the progress that our specialty has already made and will continue to make in the future. We pride ourselves in the foremost delivery of clinical care in the broadening field of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine which also incorporates Acute and Chronic Pain Medicine as well as Intensive Care Medicine in the many specialty units of our institution. This care is delivered by more than sixty faculty, seventy residents and fellows as well as over sixty certified registered nurse anesthetists and advanced practice clinicians serving our health center. Our core contribution to postgraduate medical education is exemplary, with over seventy resident physicians within our ACGME accredited anesthesiology residency, and fellowships in critical care medicine, chronic pain medicine, cardiovascular anesthesiology, and pediatric anesthesiology. A competitive research scholarship, the Joseph Priestley Scholarship, is available to assist in training future physician-scientists. Our continuing medical education is at the cutting edge for all our staff, as we hold a number of nationally recognized events for simulation, regional anesthesia and perioperative echocardiography training. Our research and scholarship is internationally recognized for its substantial contributions to basic, translational and clinical sciences. In summary, we strive to deliver outstanding clinical care, cutting edge research and postgraduate education second to none in the world.
