Breastfeeding Basics

Second Tuesday of each month, 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $11.00 

This class is designed for the expectant woman.  It identifies the benefits of breastfeeding for the family.  Topics include:

  • Anatomy of breastfeeding
  • Positions and latch
  • Feeding on demand
  • Potential problems and solutions
  • Pumping  and returning to work

Fathers are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Facilitator(s): All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and registered nurses.

Prepared Childbirth

Wednesday, 6 to 8:30 p.m. (Three week series), or Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (One day session)

Cost: $63 (Most insurance plans will reimburse payment, including Medicaid.) 

The Prepared Childbirth Class is designed to prepare the expectant woman and her support person intellectually, emotionally, and physically for the childbearing experience. Topics covered in this course include: 

  • Stages of labor and delivery
  • Comfort measures for labor and delivery
  • Pain management options
  • Possible interventions in labor and delivery
  • Cesarean delivery
  • Postpartum care and adjustments
  • Tour of Labor and Delivery Unit

Facilitator(s): All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and registered nurses.

Location: Mohler Senior Center, 25 Hope Drive, Hershey (Wednesday classes); Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, College of Medicine entrance, room C3621 (unless otherwise indicated; Saturday classes)

Additional information: You may bring pillows, a towel or yoga mat, birth ball, snacks/drinks. A confirmation letter will be sent to you. If you take the prepared childbirth class, there is no extra charge for the breastfeeding class.

Infant Safety and CPR

Third Tuesday of every month, 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: Included in Early Parenting Series. If purchased separately, $21. 

This class provides parents with basic information on infant safety and CPR. Individual practice on mannequins is provided.  Topics include:

  • CPR for infants up to one year
  • Management of the choking infant
  • Car seat basics
  • Safe sleep
  • Around the home safety

Facilitator(s): All classes are taught by certified American Heart Association BLS instructors and registered nurses.

Infant Care

Fourth Tuesday of every month, 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: Included in the Early Parenting Series. If purchased separately, $16. 

New parents have many questions about caring for their new baby. This popular class covers specifics expectant parents will need to care for their newborn infants from birth to three months of age. Topics include:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Comforting
  • Feeding
  • Safe sleep

This class is designed to be interactive, dolls will be provided.

Facilitator(s): All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and registered nurses.

Sibling Class

First Tuesday of odd months, 6 to 7 p.m. 

Cost: $11.00 per family

The Sibling Class is designed for future big brothers and sisters ages three to eight. It provides siblings and their parents with information to help adjust to the arrival of the new baby. Siblings will become prepared for separation from their mothers during the time when she is at the hospital. A parent must accompany children attending the class.

A tour of our Women's Health postpartum unit is included.

Postpartum Breastfeeding Support: Mothers and Babies

Most Tuesdays of each month, 10 a.m. to noon, or Every Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon 

Cost: No charge for this class.

This class is designed for after the birth of your baby. It provides nutritional information for your new baby and open discussion on breastfeeding and mothers who are returning to work. This support group is for all mothers to share, learn, and have fun with their babies. Topics include:

  • Is baby getting enough?
  • Dealing with family
  • Pumping and storage
  • Supplementing and weaning
  • Helpful hints

Facilitator(s): All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and registered nurses.

Location/Registration: Tuesday group meets most Tuesdays of each month, 10 a.m. to noon at the Ronald McDonald House, 745 West Governor Road, Hershey. Thursday group meets every Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon. Please call 717-531-1298 to register and confirm the location.

Father's Class (fathers and babies ages 2-8 months)

First Tuesday of even months, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Cost: No charge for this class.

This class is designed as a supportive group for new fathers to share, learn, and have fun with their babies. The target age is two to eight months, topics include:

  • Father’s role
  • Supporting the new mother
  • How to comfort new babies
  • Infant massage
  • Baby slings

Facilitator(s): All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and registered nurses.

Diabetes Education

The following education opportunities are offered through our program:

  • One-on-one session with diabetes nurse educator: Individual one-hour session with diabetes nurse educator; review of how to treat high or low blood sugar, sick-day guidelines, etc.

  • Diabetes support groups at Hershey Medical Center: Please call 717-531-8395 (adults) or 717-531-7795 (children and parents)

  • Insulin pump support group: Please call 717- 531-4220 (specifically for people already using insulin pumps)

Please obtain a referral from your physician's office and an authorization from your insurance company to ensure insurance coverage. Our program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
