Residency

Orthopaedic Residency

The program consists of eight clinical services that encompass all of the recognized areas of subspecialty orthopaedic practice, each represented by fellowship-trained faculty members. A senior and junior resident are paired on each of the services; in addition to the high priority given to teaching by the faculty members, the pairing of residents encourages mentoring and camaraderie. Additional clinical rotations include emergency and inpatient consultation services at Hershey Medical Center as well as an extramural community hospital rotation which provides firsthand exposure to the common challenges of contemporary orthopaedic practice. Outpatient practice is located in the Penn State Bone and Joint Institute with musculoskeletal practitioners in orthopaedics, rheumatology, radiology, metabolic bone disease, pain management, physical medicine, and therapy services.

Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship

This fellowship is designed to prepare an orthopaedic surgeon for a career at a level I trauma center, either university or community based. The focus of the faculty is on the teaching of how to think about, plan for, and execute the care of an injured patient. The emphasis is on the understanding of the basic concepts (physiologic, anatomic, biomechanical) underlying what we as surgeons do in the operating room. We believe it is the understanding of these concepts that will allow the future traumatologist to adapt to new clinical scenarios and technologies as they present themselves.

Orthopaedic Accelerated Program

The Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation has implemented a 3+5 accelerated program, combining three years of medical school with five years of orthopaedics residency.

Matriculating students who are interested in pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery will have the opportunity to apply to this program early in their first year of medical school at the Penn State College of Medicine. After screening and interviewing with members of the department, accepted students will be placed in an accelerated track, initiating their clinical curriculum on an advanced schedule, providing mentorship, and involvement in orthopaedic research, with the goal of meeting all graduation requirements for medical school by the end of their third year, then entering orthopaedic surgery residency.

PA Program Electives

The Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation offers an elective for Physician Assistant students, both from Penn State College of Medicine and visitors from other universities.

We provide a balanced educational exposure to all disciplines within the field of orthopaedics. Participants will spend one week on each of the core services to include: joint arthroplasty, sports medicine, trauma, shoulder and elbow, pediatrics and spine.

The student will be required to take evening call one night a week and to attend morning conferences as assigned. Our primary goal is to allow the student the opportunity to obtain a diverse orthopaedic experience and to leave the rotation with a solid fundamental orthopaedic knowledge and physical exam.
