Volunteer opportunities

Our broad range of programs and services means that you can find the volunteer position that meets your interests, skills, and background. Please note that we are unable to accommodate court-ordered community service.

Cancer Center volunteer - take snack cart through infusion area. Visit with patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy treatments.

Child Life volunteer - assist Child Life specialists by providing recreational activities to hospitalized patients, helping them feel more comfortable in a scary or unfamiliar environment.

Clerical volunteer -  specific responsibilities will vary according to department needs, but might include assisting with filing, typing, mailings and assembling packets.

Emergency Department volunteer - restock rooms and carts, check oxygen tanks, check-in with patients to see if they need anything, run errands as requested.

Escort volunteer - early morning shift. Take new admission patients to their destination. Explain Surgery Waiting Area options.

Family Waiting Area volunteer - host waiting areas for adult patient families. Provide coffee, comfort and support.

Flower Cart volunteer - deliver flowers from local flower shops to patient rooms.

Gift Shop/Penn State Store volunteer - help visitors, run the cash register, and stock the shelves.

Mail Service volunteer - sort and deliver mail to patients.

Pastoral Services volunteer - provide the Sacrament of Holy Communion to Catholic patients during their hospitalization.

Patient Experience volunteer - take the comfort cart through adult waiting areas, as well as to patient rooms to offer various items such as snacks and water to families. Listen attentively and empathically, providing emotional support and explain programs and services to our patients, families or visitors.

Pet Therapy volunteer - bring your four-legged friend to the hospital, deliver joy and comfort to patients, families, and visitors. All pet therapy dogs must be registered through one of the therapy dog organizations listed on our site.

Public Relations Tours volunteer - conduct tours of the Medical Center, emphasizing specific areas according to interest of group as prearranges through public relations or student services.

Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteer - provide coffee, snacks, coloring books, and other donations to families in the Children’s Hospital (the Ronald McDonald Family Room or cart) or the waiting room near the NICU at the Medical Center. Morning, afternoon, and evening shifts available seven days a week.

Teen volunteer - lend a hand at the hospital for eight weeks during the summer.
