Care at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center

Psoriasis is one of the most common skin conditions that the dermatologists at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center treat.

The Department of Dermatology handles more than 40,000 patient visits every year, and offers evening clinic hours as well as an innovative open access clinic for acute situations.

As one of the highest-ranked clinics for patient satisfaction within Hershey Medical Center, the department is also nationally recognized, with many of our providers listed in the Best Doctors in America national database.

Psoriasis can be localized to one region of the body or it can be generalized. Our clinicians usually make the diagnosis easily after a visual review of the skin. Occasionally a skin biopsy is required to help make the diagnosis.

Many effective treatments for psoriasis exist. Our team often uses combinations of the treatments listed below.

The dermatologist may suggest starting with topical treatments that include moisturizers, topical steroids, calcipotriene, and tar.

If that isn’t effective, systemic medications may be added, including Methotrexate, Acitretin, and Cyclosporin.

Light therapy (or phototherapy) can play a role in patients who have a significant body surface area of involvement. This includes both narrow band UVB and natural sunlight.

In more severe cases, biological can be given by injections.

New drugs for the treatment of psoriasis are being studied, and our department is often investigates many of these promising and developing treatments.
