Thomas Dispenza, MD, studied biology (biochemistry) and philosophy at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., as an undergraduate. He studied medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and completed a post-sophomore fellowship in pathology in the midst of medical school before progressing to a pediatrics residency at Akron Children's Hospital in Akron, Ohio, and to a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. There, he received a grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics that enabled him to extend his fellowship to conduct basic research on microcomputed tomography as a tool for studying cardiac architecture. Upon graduation from fellowship, Dr. Dispenza accepted his present position at Penn State Children's Hospital with the intention of focusing primarily on clinical medicine and secondarily on clinical research.

Dr. Dispenza practices general pediatric cardiology, but he has a special passion for providing cardiovascular care to patients with genetic syndromes and has particularly cultivated expertise in preventive medicine - familial hypercholesterolemia being the most common single gene disorder in the United States. Dr. Dispenza has enhanced services at Penn State Children's Hospital for patients with lipid disorders and essential hypertension. He has been recognized as an affiliate of Penn State Children's Hospital's Pediatric Weight Management Program. He also collaborates with other lipidologists through the Pediatric Atherosclerosis Prevention and Lipidology Group of the National Lipid Association.

Dr. Dispenza oversees the inpatient services of the Children's Heart Group six weeks a year and sees clinic patients four days per week. Additionally, he oversees third-year medical student education in pediatric cardiology. His research interests include expanding screening for dyslipidemias in childhood.
