Functional brain mapping is a technique that is most often utilized during surgery performed with the patient “awake” (i.e. under gentle sedation) to provide a light electrical stimulation to parts of the brain to elicit specific functions and identify the safe areas to operate. This allows the ability to operate on brain tumors in critical locations that control speech, understanding, and movement. 

Skull base tumors are an umbrella term for a wide variety of tumors which occur at the bottom part (or base) of the skull. The most common tumor types are pituitary tumors and meningiomas. These tumors while often benign can cause significant neurologically problems given their location close to critical structures like the nerves for vision, hearing, and eye/facial movement. These tumors are particularly difficult to access surgically and various techniques and approaches have been developed that allow us to remove these lesions safely.
