Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery Outcomes

John Myers, MD, attended Wabash College and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He completed residencies in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and fellowships in pediatric and congenital heart surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Hospital for Sick Kids and Harley Street Clinic in London, United Kingdom.

Dr. Myers joined the faculty at Penn State College of Medicine and became chief of pediatric and congenital heart surgery. His clinical interests are in the surgical management of all forms of congenital heart disease, including complex neonatal reconstructive operations. He also performs surgery for adults with congenital heart defects. He has research interests in neuromonitoring during open heart surgery and development of improved extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuits. For many years, Dr. Myers has travelled to the Hospital de Ninos in Guayaquil, Ecuador, several times each year to perform open heart surgery on children. During that time, he has aided the hospital in the development of its own staff and program, which is now one of the top pediatric heart surgery centers in Central and South America. Dr. Myers still travels to Ecuador twice a year to assist them as the program continues to grow and develop. He is a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology.
