Dr. Gusani is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the Society of Surgical Oncology. He serves as Chair of the Membership Committee of the Association for Academic Surgery, for which he also serves on the Executive Council. He serves as Councilor for the Faculty Organization for Penn State College of Medicine.

Dr. Gusani completed the Clinical Research Training Program at the College of Medicine, and received a Masters degree in Public Health Sciences through the NIHs K-30 grants program in 2009. His research interests include epidemiology and patterns of care in gastrointestinal malignancies and the measurement of quality and costs of care in ecologic surgery. An active current focus of research involves the role of physical activity and prehabilitation in the outcomes of patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery.

Dr. Gusani has authored or co-authored 40 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters and invited manuscripts.

Dr. Gusani has an active presence on Twitter (@NirajGusani) and is involved in helping other surgeons learn to harness new media and social media for professional use and patient education. In 2012 and 2013 he hosted symposia at national surgical conferences on surgeons and their use of new media, mobile applications, the internet, and social media.
