Department overview

The Department of Medicine is the largest department within Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Since our founding in 1969, we’ve been committed to excellence in patient care, education, research, and service.

Nationally-ranked physicians

Many of our physicians are recognized each year as among the top 10 percent in the nation in patient satisfaction scores.

Distinguished educators

Eleven faculty members have been selected to join the College's Academy of Distinguished Educators. Many more have received a department teaching or mentoring award.

Service to the community

Our service includes activities within Penn State Health as well as participation in local, regional, national and international organizations and activities.

We participate in Lion Care, a student-run organization that provides free health care to homeless individuals in nearby Harrisburg.

Strength of the Penn State Health system

As a part of the Penn State Health system, we have access to world-class expertise and specialists. Our team members work in close collaboration with specialists throughout Hershey Medical Center. 


Patient care

We provide patient care and oversight for the diagnostic and treatment centers at Hershey Medical Center through our 10 divisions, including general internal medicine as well as focused expertise within nine specialty areas. Our outpatient visits are growing - we now provide 100,000 outpatient visits every year.


Our faculty engage learners at all levels, including students enrolled in our medical and graduate schools, as well as residents, fellows, and physician colleagues. We have 11 accredited fellowship programs. 


Penn State University is a top tier public research university in America, and many of our faculty members engage in collaborative research with faculty in other Colleges at Penn State. Our research programs include close to $50 million of sponsored research each year.

Residents, fellows, and medical students participate in clinical, basic and translational research in collaboration with our faculty. Due to our strong research efforts, our department has received a NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award.
